Human resources interview questions and answers

The questions panels ask for human resources roles, with a tip for each.

HR interviews test fairness, confidentiality, knowledge of labour practice and how you handle sensitive conversations.

  1. How would you handle a conflict between two employees?

Listen to both, stay neutral, find facts, agree on a solution and follow up, within company policy.

  2. How do you ensure fairness in recruitment?

Clear criteria, structured interviews, documented decisions.

  3. What do you know about Nigerian labour law?

Mention the Labour Act basics, such as contracts, notice and leave. Be honest about your level.

Describe agreeing the job requirements, advertising, screening, interviewing, checking references and keeping candidates informed.

  6. How would you handle an employee who is often late?

Speak privately to understand the cause, remind them of the policy, set clear expectations and follow the disciplinary process if it continues.

  7. What do you know about Nigerian labour law?

Show basic awareness of employment contracts, notice periods, pension and leave. Say you would check current rules before advising.

  8. How do you keep staff motivated?

Mention recognition, training, fair pay review, clear goals and listening to feedback.

  9. How do you handle confidential complaints?

General questions to expect as well

  1. Tell me about yourself.

About one minute: who you are now, one or two relevant strengths or achievements, and why you want this job. Do not read out your CV.

  2. Why should we hire you?

Match your skills and experience to the job requirements in two or three clear points.

  3. What salary do you expect?

Research typical pay for the role first. Give a reasonable range, and say you are open to discuss based on the full package.

Use the STAR method for behaviour questions

When a question starts with “Tell me about a time…”, answer in four short parts:

  1. Situation. Set the scene in one or two sentences.
  2. Task. Say what you had to achieve.
  3. Action. Explain what you did yourself. Use “I” more than “we”.
  4. Result. Say what happened, with a number if you can, and what you learned.

Before the interview

  • Read the job advert again and prepare one example for each requirement.
  • Bring copies of your CV, certificates and ID. The job application checklist lists what to carry.
  • Practise out loud with the interview practice timer.
  • Plan your journey, arrive early and switch off your phone.
