Graduate trainee interview questions and tips
Why did you choose your course, and how does it prepare you for this programme?
Link your course content, projects or final-year work to the trainee role.
Tell me about a project or leadership role at school.
Use STAR. Show teamwork, responsibility and a result.
Are you willing to be posted to any location?
Be honest. If you are flexible, say so, and explain how you would handle relocation.
What do you know about our company and its products?
Read the company website and recent news before the interview. Mention one product, one value and one recent development, then connect it to why you applied.
Tell me about a time you led a team or a project.
Class projects, clubs, religious groups and community work all count. Say what the goal was, what you did to organise people and what the result was.
How do you handle feedback or criticism?
Describe a real example where you received feedback, what you changed and how it improved your work.
Are you willing to relocate or work in any location?
Be honest. If you are flexible, say so clearly. If you have limits, explain them calmly and show commitment to the role.
What would you do in your first 90 days?
Say you would listen, learn the business and the team, finish your first tasks well and ask for feedback early.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
Pick something recent and concrete, such as a project, a result or a challenge you overcame, and explain what you personally did.
General questions to expect as well
Tell me about yourself.
About one minute: who you are now, one or two relevant strengths or achievements, and why you want this job. Do not read out your CV.
Why should we hire you?
Match your skills and experience to the job requirements in two or three clear points.
What salary do you expect?
Research typical pay for the role first. Give a reasonable range, and say you are open to discuss based on the full package.

Use the STAR method for behaviour questions
When a question starts with “Tell me about a time…”, answer in four short parts:
- Situation. Set the scene in one or two sentences.
- Task. Say what you had to achieve.
- Action. Explain what you did yourself. Use “I” more than “we”.
- Result. Say what happened, with a number if you can, and what you learned.
Before the interview
- Read the job advert again and prepare one example for each requirement.
- Bring copies of your CV, certificates and ID. The job application checklist lists what to carry.
- Practise out loud with the interview practice timer.
- Plan your journey, arrive early and switch off your phone.
