Banking and finance interview questions and answers

The questions panels ask for banking and finance roles, with a tip for each.

Banking interviews test numeracy, honesty, customer handling and your knowledge of the Nigerian financial sector. Expect scenario questions about money, risk and targets.

Banking and finance interview questions and tips

  1. What do you know about the banking sector in Nigeria today?

Mention current themes such as digital payments, regulation by the CBN, and competition. Read recent news first.

  2. How would you handle a customer who is angry about a failed transaction?

Listen, apologise, find facts, fix or escalate, and follow up. Show calm and accuracy.

  3. How would you persuade a customer to open a new account?

Ask about their needs, explain benefits that fit them, and be honest about terms.

  4. Why banking, and why not another industry?

Show interest in finance and customers, and some knowledge of the bank.

  5. Why do you want to work in a bank rather than another industry?

Give honest reasons tied to the work: working with money, customers and numbers, and a clear career path. Avoid saying only that banks pay well.

  6. How would you attract new customers to open accounts?

Mention referrals, community and school visits, digital channels and follow-up. Show that you understand targets and customer trust.

  7. What is the difference between a savings account and a current account?

A savings account is for keeping money and earning interest, with limits on withdrawals. A current account is for frequent payments and transactions, usually with no interest.

  8. What would you do if you found a mistake in a transaction you processed?

Report it at once, correct it following procedure and tell your supervisor. Honesty matters more than hiding an error.

  9. How do you cope with sales targets?

Explain how you plan your week, track your numbers and ask for help early. Give an example of meeting a target in school or work.

  10. What do you understand by KYC?

KYC means know your customer: confirming who a customer is and where their money comes from, to prevent fraud and money laundering.

General questions to expect as well

  1. Tell me about yourself.

About one minute: who you are now, one or two relevant strengths or achievements, and why you want this job. Do not read out your CV.

  2. Why should we hire you?

Match your skills and experience to the job requirements in two or three clear points.

  3. What salary do you expect?

Research typical pay for the role first. Give a reasonable range, and say you are open to discuss based on the full package.

Use the STAR method for behaviour questions

When a question starts with “Tell me about a time…”, answer in four short parts:

  1. Situation. Set the scene in one or two sentences.
  2. Task. Say what you had to achieve.
  3. Action. Explain what you did yourself. Use “I” more than “we”.
  4. Result. Say what happened, with a number if you can, and what you learned.

Before the interview
