Courses You Can Study With 150 or Lower JAMB Score in Nigeria (Without Wasting a Year)

Lol, I can still remember the thick smell of diesel from the generator at the cybercafé in Minna when my friend, Aminu, checked his UTME result back in 2021. The screen blinked: 145. He literally almost slumped in the plastic chair, putting both hands on his head. We both thought his university dreams were dead for that year.

Like most Nigerian students, he believed anything below 200 meant staying at home for another full year. But we were wrong, and he didn’t stay at home. If you are staring at your screen right now, desperately searching for courses you can study with 150 or lower JAMB score in Nigeria, please take a deep breath.

Your life is not over, and you do not automatically have to buy another JAMB form. I have guided hundreds of students through this exact panic on edujobsafrica.com, and I will show you the exact roadmap we use to secure admission against the odds.

Understanding How Admission Actually Works in Nigeria

Many students do not understand that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) only sets a national minimum baseline. They do not dictate the absolute final cut-off for every single institution in the country. Federal universities will typically insist on 180 or 200, but they are not your only options.

State universities, private universities, and polytechnics have different mandates. For many state-owned and private institutions, a score of 140 or 150 is legally acceptable for certain faculties, provided you have your complete five O’level credits. The secret is knowing which faculties actually want you.

Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Are Gold Mines

When Nigerian parents think of university, they only see Medicine, Law, and Engineering. This blind obsession creates a massive loophole in other departments. Faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences are often looking for students to fill their NUC-approved quotas.

If you are looking for university courses you can study with 150 or lower JAMB score in Nigeria, you should be looking at Soil Science, Forestry, Fisheries, and Crop Production. I know you probably didn’t dream of studying Fisheries, but having a B.Agric on a university campus is infinitely better than sitting at home writing UTME three more times.

The Education Faculty Lifeline

Another highly neglected area is the Faculty of Education. Institutions actively try to encourage students to become teachers, which means their departmental cut-off marks are traditionally the lowest across the board.

You can comfortably secure admission to study courses like Physics Education, Adult Education, or Geography Education with a score of 150 in many state universities. The beautiful thing is that a B.Sc.Ed still qualifies you for the exact same NYSC camp, and the exact same corporate jobs, as the guy who studied standard B.Sc. Physics.

Bypassing the University Bottleneck Through Polytechnics

I always tell secondary school leavers not to look down on National Diploma (ND) programs. If your score is hovering around 120 to 150, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education are designed specifically to accommodate you.

You can study highly practical courses like Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Mass Communication, or Business Administration at a polytechnic. After two years, you simply purchase a Direct Entry form and cross over into 200-level at a Federal University. It is a brilliant, legal backdoor that saves you the stress of rewriting JAMB.

The Honest Truth Nobody Tells You

Let me be brutally honest with you, because I see too many desperate students get scammed every admission season. You cannot study Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, or Law with a 140 or 150 score. It is statistically and practically impossible.

Do not give any “admission agent” or “runs guy” your hard-earned money claiming they can slot your name into the Medicine list. The Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) is highly automated. If your score does not meet the department’s minimum requirement on the portal, no human being can bypass it for you. Accept your reality and pivot.

Your Immediate Action Plan

To salvage your admission year, you need to act fast. Here is exactly what I tell the students I mentor to do the moment they see a low score:

  1. Buy the JAMB Change of Course/Institution form immediately from an accredited CBT centre.
  2. Swap out that highly competitive Federal university for a State university, a Private university, or a Polytechnic in your catchment area.
  3. Change your course from highly competitive ones to Agriculture, Education, or Arts.
  4. Ensure your WAEC or NECO results are successfully uploaded to your JAMB CAPS portal, as you will not be considered without it.

Don’t Let UTME Break You

Your UTME score does not define your intelligence. I struggled with this exam twice before I finally figured out how the Nigerian admission system works. Whether you end up in a Polytechnic or a state university’s agriculture department, what matters is the degree you graduate with and the skills you build.

Stop beating yourself up. Pick from the available courses you can study with 150 or lower JAMB score in Nigeria, do your change of institution, and start preparing for your post-UTME screening. The clock is ticking, and your future is still very much in your hands.
