NYSC Says Every Prospective Corps Member Must Get NERD Clearance Before Mobilisation

MUSCLES has made NERD clearance compulsory for all prospective corps members. See what NERD is, the documents you need, the steps to follow, and the NYSC Batch C 2026 dates.

Article body

NYSC has said no prospective corps member will be mobilised again without a NERD clearance slip. The scheme put this out on its official X page, and it wasn’t a soft warning. “Without NERD clearance, no NYSC,” the notice read. Then NYSC said it again, just so nobody would claim they didn’t see it: “No NERD clearance, No NYSC!!!”

So if you’re still waiting to be called up for service, this is one requirement you can’t skip anymore. It doesn’t matter if your school has cleared you, if your result is out, or if you’ve already started dreaming about your camp state. Without NERD, your file simply won’t move.

NERD is the national database now checking your project before NYSC takes you

NERD stands for Nigeria Education Repository and Databank. Some schools’ internal notices call it the National Educational Research and Development portal, but either way, it’s the same system. Think of it like this: it’s a central government cupboard where every graduate’s final year project, thesis or dissertation gets stored and checked, so nobody can just print a fake one and walk into NYSC camp.

Before now, your school alone decided if your project was good enough. Now, NERD adds another layer. Your project gets uploaded to the portal, it runs through a plagiarism check, and only after that does the system mark you as cleared. NYSC now uses this clearance to confirm your academic record is real before it lets you into its own system. No NERD record, no wahala explaining, you simply won’t be mobilised.

This tightening is happening right as NYSC opens Batch C 2026 registration

NYSC didn’t just wake up and announce this out of nowhere. It came almost immediately after the scheme opened mobilisation for the 2026 Batch “C” service year. NERD clearance is now sitting right there among the requirements graduates must sort out before registration closes.

Here are the dates you need to hold onto:

WhatDate
NYSC Batch C 2026 online registration opens7 September 2026
NYSC Batch C 2026 online registration closes13 September 2026
NERD clearanceMust be completed before you finish NYSC registration

If your registration deadline is close and your NERD clearance still isn’t sorted, don’t wait until the last day. The portal gets congested and slips can take a few days to process after your project is approved.

Get these documents ready before you even open the NERD portal

You don’t want to be searching for a scanned copy of your ID at 11pm while the deadline is by midnight. Get these ready first:

  • A valid means of identification, in JPG, JPEG or PNG format
  • Passport photograph. White background if you can manage it
  • Your complete final year project, thesis or dissertation as a PDF, with the approval or certification page included
  • Something that proves your status in school. A statement of result, a clearance letter, or a student status attestation letter from your registrar will do

Your name, matric number and graduation year on these documents must match exactly what you’ll later use on the NYSC portal. If there’s a mismatch anywhere, sort it out with your school first. NERD won’t accept guesswork.

Steps to follow to get your NERD clearance slip

  1. Go to the official NERD portal at ned.gov.ng/onboarding. Don’t use any other link someone sends you on WhatsApp, even if it looks similar.
  2. Enter an email address you check often, then click “Send Verification Link.”
  3. Open your email, including your spam folder, and click the verification link. If the button refuses to work, just copy the link and paste it into your browser.
  4. On the onboarding form, select “Student” under Role, then search and select your institution from the list. Type part of the name, don’t type the whole thing out yourself.
  5. Fill in your academic details and personal information, then click “More” to continue instead of “Save.”
  6. Under KYC, upload your passport photo and your means of ID, following the file size and format the portal asks for.
  7. Once onboarding is done, sign in again to submit your project. Choose the type, whether it’s a project, term paper, seminar paper or dissertation, then upload your PDF.
  8. NERD runs a similarity check automatically. If your work comes back with high similarity, you’ll be asked to edit and re-upload it.
  9. After your submission is approved, go back to your dashboard and click “Process NERD Clearance.”
  10. Download or print your clearance slip. It will carry a unique ID or QR code, and that’s what you present during NYSC mobilisation.

Doing it yourself this way is free. Nobody should be collecting money from you to upload your project on your behalf.

Some schools use accredited agents instead, and that one costs money

Not every graduate uploads their own project. Some institutions have directed students to go through NERD-accredited agents or NERD Digital Service Centres instead. That route usually comes with a fee, somewhere between ₦10,500 and ₦20,000, depending on the centre. If your school has already told you to use an agent, follow that process. Don’t try self-upload instead.

Foreign-trained graduates are not exempted either. But you don’t need an agent at all. You register directly on the NERD portal built for foreign graduates and upload your project the same way.

Only pay an accredited agent if your own school has directed you to. Random people online charging you to “process” your NERD clearance are most likely scammers, and NYSC has not appointed any individual agents outside the official channel.

What happens to you if you skip your NERD clearance before mobilisation

Simple. Your mobilisation gets delayed, or you don’t get mobilised at all for that batch. NYSC has been blunt about this one, it isn’t hiding behind soft language. Now, if your school hasn’t started uploading projects on NERD yet, that part is out of your hands. Ask your department or registrar’s office directly. Don’t just assume nothing is happening.

If you already completed your NYSC registration before this NERD requirement came up, you should still check with NYSC or your school if you need to go back and complete it. Don’t assume you’re exempted just because you registered earlier.

[LOCAL TIP: add a real detail from your own experience helping someone through the NERD portal, like the best time of day the site loads without lagging]

TL;DR

  • NYSC has made NERD clearance compulsory for all prospective corps members, no exceptions.
  • NERD stands for Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, and it verifies your final year project before NYSC will mobilise you.
  • NYSC Batch C 2026 online registration runs from 7 to 13 September 2026.
  • Get your ID, passport photo, project soft copy and a school status document ready before you start.
  • Register or log in at ned.gov.ng/onboarding, upload your project, wait for approval, then print your clearance slip.
  • Self-upload is free. Accredited agents charge between ₦10,500 and ₦20,000 if your school directs you to use one.
  • No NERD clearance means no mobilisation, so don’t leave it till the last day.
